About Science Alive!
Science Alive was established in 1991, as a science and technology learning and entertainment centre. In 1993, we completed the purchase of the iconic Railway Station building on Moorhouse Avenue.
On 22 February 2011, following a series of earthquakes, the building was evacuated. After the most damaging earthquake in Christchurch’s history, it was later assessed as uninhabitable.
Science Alive is a New Zealand Charitable Trust established to inspire the public in Science & Technology, through interactive experiences.
We aim to raise awareness of careers in science, scientific research, the applied sciences and technologies; and to showcase New Zealand successes in these fields.
We have access to a team of Astrophysicists, Engineers, Biotechnologists, Biochemists, Computer engineers and User experience designers.
We also have a very strong network of collaborators and fabricators, who we utilise for a project on a case by case basis.
Since 1999, Science Alive has exported over $8 million of exhibits to Science Centres throughout the world.
Science Alive has produced interactive exhibits for Te Papa (New Zealand), Al Khobar (Saudi Arabia), Exploratorium (USA), Tech Dome (Malaysia), Science Centre Singapore, and many more Museums, Science Centres and Organisations.
Science Alive is currently in a redevelopment phase, looking at new strategies and projects. We have previously run a wide range of science and technology programmes.
The Future of Science Alive: 2022 and beyond
Since the loss of widely loved Science Alive in Christchurch as a result of the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes, Science Alive
has been operating outreach programmes - visiting schools and communities, sharing our love of science and technology.
Now, after much planning, with 2022 comes the new, rejuvenated Science Alive. Our team have quietly been working on how best to deliver our mission to promote, inspire and engage people with the endless opportunities that the world of science holds.
We believe in the potential of every child and are driven to spark hope, excitement and curiosity within our future generations. We recognise that the world is changing at an unprecedented rate, and the demands and lifestyles of our youth are moving with this.
In 2022 Science Alive is launching a suite of activities to cater to this, including online virtual education resources, new outreach programmes, in-community exhibitions and educator support. We will continue to develop more offerings and engagements with our communities, and provide more information as these become available.
Science Alive is back and determined to be better than ever, continuing to deliver our mission well into the future, bringing science to everyone, everywhere, everyday.
Thank you to our communities for your support and camaraderie during these times of change. We look forward to continuing to serve you.
